Rat Rod — Ford F100 Glossary

An intentionally rough, unfinished, or stripped-down custom truck build that embraces a raw, aggressive aesthetic over polished show quality.

A rat rod is a custom build style that deliberately avoids the polished, refined look of traditional restorations. Rat rod F-100s typically feature exposed or primer-only bodywork, visible welds, mismatched or bare-metal panels, chopped tops, and a general attitude of function over finish. The style draws from early hot rod culture, when builders used whatever parts were available and did not concern themselves with cosmetic perfection.

F-100 trucks are popular rat rod platforms because their simple body lines and bolt-on panels lend themselves to creative modification. First and second-generation trucks (1948-1956) are the most commonly built as rat rods, though any generation can receive the treatment. Typical modifications include lowered or raised suspension to extreme degrees, large-diameter rear tires, exposed engines, and minimalist interiors stripped to bare essentials.

The rat rod philosophy is fundamentally about building and driving rather than showing. These trucks prioritize personality and mechanical soundness over appearance. A well-built rat rod has solid mechanicals underneath its rough exterior. The style is not for everyone, but it remains a visible and enthusiastic segment of the F-100 community, particularly at shows and cruise-ins where these trucks draw crowds and spark conversation.
